A$$holes R Us

So when you have so many people buying you presents you are bound to get some doubles. I sorted through all of the clothes we got by size and realized that I had to return some things because based on Ella's age and the time of year they wouldn't work out - like a summer dress for January. So early last week and I went to Babies R Us and loaded a cart up with doubles and some clothes. I was excited to get a gift card because we still have a few bigger items to buy.

They took back the items with gift receipts no problem. Then I got to the items without gift receipts. The girl tells me that they can't take anything back without a gift receipt or if my registry wasn't scanned when said item was purchased.

Me: "But these outfits are from Babies R Us."
Her: "Without a receipt there is nothing I can do."
Me: "But this was never mentioned when I registered here."
Her: "This is our policy."
Me: "But all I want is a store credit to buy more things from your store."
Her: "There is nothing I can do."
Me: "Can I at least exchange the clothes for bigger/smaller sizes of the same exact outfits?"
Her: "Nope."
Me: "I need the manager."

So the manager comes and tells me the same crap and has no remorse whatsoever. I started to argue about all the money that was spent on me through their store because I chose to register there...She told me to call corporate. I wanted to say horrible, awful things to her but she really doesn't give a sh*t about me or what I have to say. The next day I called Schaumburg Babies r Us and was told the same thing and found out that their policy just changed in August of last year. I went online and there are hundreds of horror stories about Babies and Toys r Us.

The sad thing is that I went to Target later in the week and was told the same thing. No gift receipt - no return or even exchange (Even though the things I tried returning are Target Brand!!!). What is the world coming to? I'm going to try Buy Buy Baby next even though I'm sure none of these things came from there. Luckily Buy Buy Baby is coming to Schaumburg in June and no one will ever have to register at the dreaded Babies r Us again!

Wow. That is a total drag. I would have been really pissed if that was the policy when I had Ellie's shower. Its completely rediculous.

Actually, now that I think about it, E got some stuff from TRU for Christmas that I tried to return without a receipt and even though it had the TRU tag on it they wouldn't take it back. Bullshit.

So annoying! Sorry about that Kelly....such crap! I will keep my fingers crossed that Bye Bye Baby returns these items.

Also totally did not know they are coming to Schaumburg....do you know where?

I may be the queen of returns -- here are a few tips! Try Walmart -- say you registered there (even if you didn't - they don't check.) I actually did, but they took EVERYTHING back, even without a reciept. You can look online to see if they carry the items. Meijer and Kohls are also awesome for returns without reciepts. Just go to their websites first and find the items. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips Emilie. Teresa: Buy Buy Baby is going into the old Joann Fabrics by Barnes and Noble on Golf Road in June! I can't wait.

They suck, but what I learned is ...if you add it on your registry now, there is a chance they will exchange it. Try that. I just added a car seat to our registry and Nick used the 10% coupon on left over items from the registry and a 15% coupon. And I just added it 3 days ago. It might work.

BUY BUY Baby should take it back because it is owned by bed bath and beyond and we all know they are great at returns. That totally stinks. Someone should create a blog just to bitch about Target and Babies R Us return policies.

I swear babies r us caused my high blod pressure when I was pregnant with Raegan.

BRU sucks and so does Target. I'm really surprised that Target hasn't changed their policy b/c it seems like a lot of people don't register for wedding stuff there b/c of it. I wonder if BRU will revisit their policy when Buy Buy Baby starts infringing on their monopoly.

That really does suck. Especially because we end up being kinda dependant on BRU for lots of things and there aren't alot of alternatives to them. We kinda get screwed. They should post big signs at their registers so people buying gifts will know to always include gift receipts!

I would love to drive my car through the front window of BRU using my broken diaper bag as a hood ornament.

I've had a number of 'discussions' with Babies R Us and Target over these same issues! We had a baby shower in July '08 and received a convertible car seat for when our child grew out of her infant seat. This month we decided to install it only to find out that it didn't recline back enough for rear-facing. So we took a copy of our registry and the car seat in the box back to BRU. It wasn't until I told the lady that I couldn't wait for Buy Buy Baby to open down the street that they finally took the car seat back but only for the price it was at currently. Not sure what price she gave me because it was listed on the shelf for $40 more than what we received. We then drove to Buy Buy Baby in Downers Grove and purchased the car seat we wanted from them. Their return policy: as long as it hasn't been used, they will take it back within the year.

Buy Buy Baby is the best physical (and virtual) store out there. This is our first child, and they have just the best customer service. I may be weird, but a store that offers you a bottle of water the minute you walk in, gets my business. We have been going to the Downers Grove store, while waiting for the Schaumburg location to open, hopefully by the end of August.
Babies R US should not be in business much longer. In fact, we've noticed that they've been combining kids, toys, and babies stores. The beginning of the end.

Smart strategy on BuyBuyBaby (and Bed Bath Beyond for that matter) to establish themselves as a dumping ground for unneeded/unwanted items. We've probably spent more money there as a result of their flexible return policy. As for the Schaumburg store, it is finally going to open on the 25th. I think that is going to crush the BabiesRUs that is just down the road. Between their price matching and accepting Bed Bath coupons, there is little reason to go to BabiesRUs.
